The Surf Season Begins
Facing the open Pacific Ocean, Morotai receives long-period swells across a coastline of coral reef breaks, with four left-hand and two right-hand waves around the island.
The main surf season runs from October through May, and the beginning of the season offers the opportunity to discover Morotai before the stronger peak-season swells arrive later in the year.
Some breaks are close to Moro Ma Doto, while others can be explored by car or boat according to the day’s swell, wind and tide. Here, the experience is as much about exploration as it is about surfing: warm water, tropical surroundings and line-ups that remain remarkably uncrowded.
More Than Surf
A longer stay also leaves time to experience another side of Morotai. How To Get to Morotai
Reaching Morotai is part of the adventure. Most international travelers fly to Jakarta or Bali, followed by a domestic flight to Ternate (North Maluku). From Ternate, Morotai can be reached either by a short scenic flight or by speedboat via Sofifi and Tobelo, offering beautiful views of the Maluku archipelago along the way.
